It was Ancient Greece years ago the studded dog collar came about,dogs were used to control and protect herds of cattle, they used a studded or spiked collar to protect the dog. When archaeologist were excavating in Pompeii they came about some remains of a very old dog. The animal was wearing a studded dog collar and it had the inscription saying that the dog had protected and saved its owner from the attack of a wolf.
After some time when Europe was going through the Renaissance, dogs served two purpose to fight and hunt,the owners wanted to protect them from being bitten around the neck and face by other animals so to help protect them, the farmers would place spikes through the collar all around the neck.The other purpose the collar served was to protect the owners property, when vandals, thieves or crooks saw the dog and the spikes around the neck they assumed the dog was very agressive and decided to stay away from the property.
Down through history dogs were taken into battles and wars and they were equiped with studded collars.They were used to fight and to distract the opposition. Back in the day a Mastiff of Henry VIII survived a dog battle and was awarded the silver reward dog collar given to him by the king.
The Studded dog collar has been around for a very long time for all types of reasons, protection for the dog being the key one. Even today these types of collars are being found in various places and historic places.
Today studded dog collars are a thing of fashion and are very popular, they are not used so much for protection as they were in the day but a big seller for many a store.
