Organize Your Garage – 5 Storage Solutions

The garage is one room in the house that quickly accumulates stuff. This is exactly why having numerous storage solutions in the garage can make life a lot easier.

Here are five handy dandy storage solutions for your garage.

Slat Board Walls

A horizontal slat board system will help you organize different items on your garage walls. Slat board is quite popular because it can be rearranged anytime. Install 1×4-foot or 1×8-foot sections, which can be linked together using dowels. Individual sections are another options, which you can set up directly onto wall studs.

Other slat boards can even hold large objects like a cabinet.

Storage Tub

Ordinary shelves probably won’t work because once your garage accumulates so much stuff, looking for certain object will be a pain. You’ll have better luck sorting through your things if you line up storage tubs along your shelves. Storage tubs are available in different shapes and sizes. Put labels on the tubs so you know where to grab things right away.

Storage tubs usually come with lids. Keeping the tubs sealed will help prevent damage to your belongings.

Storage Loft

If your garage has open ceiling joists, see if there’s enough space to turn it into a storage compartment. Install a piece of plywood up there to form an attic-type storage space. Use this space for items you don’t use too often, like old toys, old pieces of furniture and spare luggage. To get stuff from up there, simply climb up a ladder.

The storage loft is going to be above your head. So, always follow safety precautions when putting the plywood up there. Use plywood that’s thick enough to carry a lot of weight.

Hooks and Pegboard

Of course, you also have items and tools that you use every day. It only makes sense to place these items at arm’s reach. Aside from slat boards, pegboards with hooks can also hang different objects. Most hardware stores sell all types of pegboards and hooks, which can hang just about everything, from hammers to garden shears. There are even hooks for keeping brooms, rakes and extension cords.

Brackets and Particle Board

The particle board and brackets are for installing shelves. This combination of storage solutions works a lot like pegboards with hooks, but the brackets are there to support the shelves, which actually provide the storage space. Place items that can’t be hung on these shelves, such as spray lubricant for your car, batteries, a spare gas can and other hardware.

How to Organize

For any organizing task, the first thing to do is to always sort out your belongings. Go through each and every item in your garage and choose which items to keep in storage and which to throw away. Donate things you no longer need but still in good condition. This way, you know which items to hang on hooks, place on shelves and keep in storage lofts. Sketch out a plan for the items in your garage and the type of storage they need.
