New Cat Care

You’ve just adopted a new kitty and you want everything to work out great. Here a some ideas to get you going:

1. Before you bring kitty home you need to run a few errands for some of the basics:

Litter box- whether you want to use clay, wheat or corn be sure it is the scoopable kind.

Scooper- get a metal one so that it lasts a long time.

Food- get a premium food that does not have corn, wheat or soy. These are the #1 allergens in foods.

Water- cats do not drink enough water so the best thing that you could add to your new pet’s home is a pet drinking fountain. The running water piques their curiosity and encourages them to drink more.

Bowls- buy metal or glass because plastic can cause kitty acne.

Grooming supplies- a metal brush is a must. Let kitty’s reaction tell you how much she likes to be groomed.

Toys- cats will train you to play with them each day. No matter the age of your cat their hunting instincts are intact. You just need to figure out what they like best: toys with bells, feathers, balls?

Carrier- plastic carriers can be costly, but safety needs to be a priority. Carrying you new kitty out to the car or holding him on your lap can cause an accident. Your cat does not know you yet and can get nervous and jump out of your arms.

Never forget a cool cat condo! Cat trees and cat condos come in all shapes and sizes. Your kitty will thank you for the awesome scratching posts and hiding areas.

2. Transitioning kitty into the house: Give kitty her own space in your house will create comfort and trust. A bathroom or spare room will do. Keep kitty in the room and let her acclimate to the sounds and smells of her new home. Remember to play with kitty and spend quality time in her room with her.

Be sure to spend lots of time in the room playing and providing treats.

Do not expect him to be out and about right away. Just like people, cats can be shy or outgoing. Let him have time to be who he is.

3. Letting kitty into the entire house: Read up on introducing new animals into a multi-animal household on the Humane Society of the United States website.

Introduce him slowly over the next few weeks. Always keep his intro room available as a safe place. Remember to give him lots of attention and praise.

Your new family member will decide how much time he wants to spend with you or other animals. Accept him for who he is. Love him and keep in mind that you are his world and he needs you for everything.
