The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a tiny loving dog, fondly called the love sponge. Traditionally, during Tudor times in Britain, Toy Spaniels were quite common as ladies and childrens ‘ pets, but it was under the Stuarts that they were given the royal title of King Charles Spaniels. King Charles II was infrequently seen without two or three little spaniels at his heels. The red and white strain of Toy Spaniels was bred at Blenheim Palace by various Dukes of Marlborough. The breed disappeared due to the acceptance of flat faced dogs like Pugs and King Charles Spaniel (also called “Charlies” and known in the United States as the English Toy Spaniel). The breed was reintroduced in the 1920 and in 1945 the Kennel Club granted separate registration for the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
To learn more about the breed I would recommend looking for a local breed club. A local club will let you have interaction with breeders that have been with the breed for a number of years. Extra breed information can be gained from the national clubs web sites.
Selecting a young dog – all puppies are cute, happy and impossible to resist. The selection of a reputable, responsible and experienced breeder is the most important step you can take to help you in finding a healthy, temperamentally sound young dog that can become a similarly healthy and temperamentally sound adult dog that’ll be a part of your family for years to come. Let the breeder lead you, the breeder has observed the puppies since birth and has a understanding into each puppies personality and traits.
Are you worthy of buying? A good indicator of how seriously a breeder is will be evident in their interaction with prospective buyers. Be prepared for the 5th degree interview if they care about placing their puppies. They ought to be in a position to let you engage with the mother to see her personality (mom unavailable should be a red flag). The breeder should be concerned about the well-being of the young dog after placement and will have questions on your whole family schedule, home and yard. The breeder will also need a neuter/spay contract on pet puppies. The harder it is to qualify as a Cavalier puppy purchaser the higher the chance you are working with a responsible breeder. A top notch breeder will be looking for more out of a buyer just someone to buy their King Charles Cavalier puppies for sale.
Temperment problems or health issues may come from a poorly bred dog. Imported or shipped in dogs do not enable you to interact with the breeder or parents and grand-parents. It is worth the time to do your reasearch and require health testing documentation. You are adding a member to your family that will be with you for many years.
