Every trainer will set his or her own guidelines regarding when puppies can begin their training classes. Most will accept puppies between 10 weeks and 4 months of age, because this is when socialization is most important. At this age, puppies are like sponges, ready to soak up all the important information, and short, dynamic training sessions can overcome their brief attention spans. With their constantly fluttering, meandering attention spans, puppies are like most Americans.

Puppies at this age are vulnerable to disease, so care must be taken so they are not exposed to non-vaccinated or sick dogs. Unlike human youngsters, dogs do not enjoy their sick days home from school! Veterinarians are split on the best timetable for vaccinations: Some doctors favor one set of vaccines before beginning puppy class or other canine get-togethers, while others recommend two sets.

All vets advise puppy owners to watch out for dogs that haven’t had at least one set of vaccines, those that are generally unhealthy and those that are highly aggressive. Just as with human children, you don’t want to send your dog off to school with a bunch of bad apples!

According to Jenny Schiebert, D.V.M., of Shadowridge Veterinary Hospital in Vista, California, puppiesabsolutely must have two sets of vaccinations at the least. Parvovirus is a very contagious and deadly disease so vaccination against it is very important.

Only well vaccinated dogs should be allowed to join the class and classes should be done in safe and secure locations. Public parks are unnacceptable because there may be several unvaccinated dogs around. The benefits of puppy training and socialization greatly outweigh the small risk of infection if there is a strong enforcement of the vaccination policy.

Schiebert says that walking out in public should be done not earlier than two weeks after the puppy’s four-month immunizations.

To simplify Dr. Schiebert’s advice, all you have to do is avoid areas where lots of dogs gather and eliminate, which can be sources of parvovirus and distemper. Dogs that have mucousy noses and are coughing may be showing signs of canine influenza or other diseases.

Bark Control

A dog that barks intensely can be very irritating to a first-time puppy owner. There are some puppies that don’t stop barking even at night and for these new dog owners the non-stop barking and yelping can be overwhelming. You don’t have to resort to buying earplugs, proper training will solve your problem.

This is a phase that all puppies go through. They bark and yelp like crazy because they are afraid to be alone. Since just came from a life of being surrounded by family 224/7, living with a human is a big change and the puppy needs time for adjustment. If you were left alone, wouldn’t you be barking too?

What can you do when faced with this situation? Running to your puppy to sooth and caress him every time he cries only feeds this behavior and creates a spoiled dog. On the other hand, if you ignore him and let him bark incessantly, your family and anyone else within earshot will become highly aggravated.

It’s a tough situation to negotiate, but here are some tips to help you.

1. Yelling will only create more fear in your puppy and as you already know, fear equals barking. Don’t yell at him but instead, just try to ignore his barking if you can. Don’t add to his anxiety.

2. Get an item called a “teaching lead,” available at many pet-relayed stores, which enables your puppy to be around you at all times in the house.

3. As you head out, try not to take too long saying goodbye to your puppy. When you arrive, don’t make such a big deal of it. the more quiet, the better. Be careful that your dog doesn’t get used to being pampered all the time

4. Put a few pennies in a small tin can. When you go to leave your dog’s side and she starts barking, simply throw the can in her area. It will create a startling noise while at the same time diverting her attention. It’s a great, quick solution and it only costs a few pennies!

Puppy training typically lasts from four to eight weeks, having one hour classes each week. Do not think that after puppy school, training your dog is over. Puppy school is just equivalent to human pre-school, there are still many stages of training to follow.

Training has really only just begun. Dogs are lifelong learners. The job of being a canine is not easy! Now that doesn’t mean you must continue with group classes – other variables come into play. If you’ve successfully owned and trained a dog in the past, you may be able to continue your new puppy’s education on your own. But many dog owners find it beneficial to work with a trainer and a group class, or a dog training club. When extra difficult problems come up, you have an advanced expert to assist you. Remember, almost all dogs come with problems included, no extra charge!

It’s important that you follow through with the training, as much or as little as you and your puppy need. Whether your dog is going to be a competitive obedience dog, a search-and-rescue dog, an agility star or just a permanent attachment to the couch (or floor), it all begins at the beginning with puppy training.
